Sorry for any confusion. I meant good as in the bottle of lube hasn't spoiled. I've left the bottle at room temperature and there hasn't been any changes in consistency since I've made it.

Just read about halophiles and really don't think it's salty enough to present a problem.

Well I first heard of fleshlight on the movie Zac and Miri Make a Porno and thought it was ridiculous. Curiosity finally got the best of me though and I ordered one. I'm glad I found this thread before spending ridiculous amounts on lube! I tried a water and cornstarch blend whacking it the old-fashioned way but as another member said on here it was too gel-like and I found it dried out much too fast. I will be trying the XG lube as soon as my FL arrives.

Salt as a preservative sounds like a great idea! I'm just curious exactly what kind of salt you're using (such as iodized or uniodized) and how much.

Found this company to be using SALT as a preservative as well. I/we should start making a competing product lol. Have you seen this simple formula used by PASSION Lube?

        Ingredients:
Water, Propanediol, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid

Sodium Benzoate acts as the preservative in this mixture. It's a well known preservative used in many foods.

That could very well make a good preservative although salt is much easier and cheaper. I also just found these ingredients used by Good Clean Love.

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Agar, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Benzoic Acid, Natural Extratives and Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Xanthan Gum

Potassium Sorbate is the main preservative here and I have seen it used in many other lubes as well (including the one you mentioned of course). This recipe is supposedly completely body-safe as it contains no parabens and it is all organic. I also found PS listed on a bottle of Propel water.

Edit: Looked up Potassium Sorbate on Amazon and found 6 oz for $12.97 and the package says to mix with 1 gallon of water. With this math, 6 oz of this should be able to preserve 128 oz of XG lube! If my math is right, that comes to about 1 1/8 tsp of PS for a 4 oz batch. To be clear, I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS. Merely gathering information at this point and wonder if anyone else has any thoughts.

I'm on board with the program but Im totally lost when I see the huge amounts of Xanthan Gum and Glycerine people are buying (a pound of the first, gallon(s!) of the latter.

As this is pretty much a male only friendly lube, how on earth is anyone using stuff at these rates?!!!

This is the longest thread on this subject and it's been inactive for some time, so thought I'd add my 2 worth and bump it to the top at the same time.

I'm really cheap so the idea of making my own lube was very appealing.

I basically followed the recipe I found here:

Insert thunderspace URL here - I wasn't allowed to post it.

              Which was basically:

              -1/2 teaspoon of xanthan gum
              -3 teaspoons of glycerin
              -4 drops of GSE
-half a cup (4 ounces) of warm water

However, I didn't use just any water, I used distilled water and boiled it first.

I also stored it in a sterilized squirt bottle - actually an *ahem* bottle used to inject marinade under the skin of poultry & other meats. I'm VERY careful with the long, uber-fat needle. I'm keeping it at room temperature in a cabinet in my bathroom. The idea of having to microwave lube before I use it just seems wrong to me.

I suspect one of the reasons so many people experience spoilage is because they use tap water and don't heat it up enough to kill all the baddies in it. I'm hoping my combination of GSE & boiled distilled water will help make it last a while. It better, 'cause a little of this stuff goes a long way!

I made about a 1/2 cup of xanthan lube about three weeks ago using distilled water and three drops of GSE as preservative. Every time I went to use it, I opened the bottle first to give it a whiff just to see if it was okay. It always was until today when I saw black spots growing all over it. Good thing I looked first!

So the distilled water trick didn't make any difference. Tonight I made a slightly smaller batch, again using GSE, but I also threw in some table salt - a couple of pinches since I've no idea how much to use. We'll see how long that lasts.

This is why I don't use this stuff. Just too many variables that can fuck up. I'm not taking any chances of getting mold or something on my dick.

OK, I don't think anybody has had 100% success with natural (or unnatural) preservatives. I've only had success with refrigeration. I use Flightrisk's recipe (it's on his profile page: https://forums.fleshlight.com/member.php?234453-FlightRisk - click on "About Me" to see it).

He advises storing it in the fridge in a brown glass bottle, which I do and it lasts for months. I've never had a batch go bad, and he said he hasn't also.

Here's the link where we talked about it.
