If anyone's read my posts, you might have noticed that I've been very critical of the STU, my first FL that I bought back in August. I was using Astroglide, and I thought the sensation of STU/Astroglide was underwhelming. Most of my flights have been disappointing to say the least. I was even tempted to throw it in the trash.

Well, I just tried the XG lube for the first time yesterday, and Oh My God is this stuff good!! This is the best lube I've ever used by far. My first flight with this stuff was incredibly pleasurable. It felt so good, I can't even describe it.

I followed the recommended formula of:
    heaping 1/4 tsp xanthan gum
    3 tsp glycerin
    4 ounces water

.. but for the next batch, I might make half the amount:
    1/8 tsp xanthan gum
    1.5 tsp glycerin
    2 ounces water.

I'm assuming it will have the exact same viscosity, am I right? I want it to be the exact same!
nice thank you for the answer and recipe. i am going to wait until i run out of lube then ill by the xm gum.

I'm sure that each 4 ounce batch will definitely spoil days before I can actually use all of it.
You will probably be fine with the expiration date.

Remember, xanthan gum was originally intended for use in food (shocking I know) as a thickener.

The expiration date is really when they can't sell it in stores anymore and still legally say it's safe for consumption.
Your xanthan gum won't suddenly expire on that date so take as long as you like.

Table salt is a cheap common natural preservative. Add some salt to the water and then you don't have to worry about bacterial growth. Then you won't have to refridgerate it.

Can anyone confirm? Does it have to be a specific kind of salt? Will sea salt work?

Salt sounds interesting, but what about raw honey? I am still waiting on my FLs to arrive, and I'm happy I found this thread in advance. I'll order some XG right away.
Unless anyone has experience with it, I'll try and mix a few batches of XG with various household preservatives, including honey, to see which lasts the longest. Science is exciting

yes I see the salt recommendation here as well.
    https://forums.fleshlight.com/showthread.php?30168-The-Lube-Lab-Share-your-ideal-lube-recipes-and-tips!

I wonder how well that has been tested.

Its certainly going to be cheaper than grapefruit seed extract, which is chore to find, what brick and mortar stores carry it, or whats the cheapest place to get it online, shipping always kills these small purchases

Should have read the whole thread, I have a package of grape seed extract sitting on my desk, a totally useless item(except for a tiny .5ml measuring spoon included, might come in handy).

    Doggers post deserves bumpage:

I do somewhat share the concerns about parabens with the endocrine effect and wish there was a known-to-be-COMPLETELY safe method of REAL and TRUE preservation. However, I think the stuff about parabens are mostly concerning internal consumption - but I could be wrong. I never see parabens listed for foods.

But the simple fact is - I'd rather take my chances with parabens than inadvertently shoving malevolent microbes up my dick if a refrigerated lube happened to be a little too old. Parabens are currently classified as GRAS(Generally Regarded As Safe) by the FDA in the US.

BTW - I've had a bottle of XG lube with methylparaben that was well over 5 months old before being used up - and it didn't smell bad at all. (Yes, non-refrigerated.) And it looks like that 4 oz. canister of methylparaben powder will last just as long as my 6 oz. canister of XG, if not longer! Still making the combination incredibly cheap when compared to store-bought lube - even WITH the shipping!

What flabbergasts me is that some people will be worried about parabens while choking down a Big Mac and not think twice about that Big Mac!

It's all a matter of perspective, IMO. But that's just me.

My advice - just forget about the GSE and get some methylparaben or Optiphen (or any REAL preservative) - and be DONE with the issue of preservation once and for all.

The issue of mixing: Just mix the XG with some glycerin BEFORE adding it to the water.. And be DONE with the problem of trying to mix it with water.

These things might cost more initially, but in the long haul they'll be WELL worth it! They'll last you a long, LONG time!

I can confirm salt is an excellent preservative. I've been using salt in my homemade lube for about the last year and haven't had any issue with my lubes spoiling. Made a huge 32 fl oz. bottle of lube a few months ago and it's still good!

Thanks for the update will try to add salt to the mixture. Just starting using X-Gum so haven't even started experimenting with preservatives yet.

Thanks for the report but it's kind of confusing, your wording goes from 'excellent' to 'still good'. How have you stored it? Has the batch shown no changes in it's properties since you made it? Have you read about halophiles? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halophile)

Sorry for any confusion. I meant good as in the bottle of lube hasn't spoiled. I've left the bottle at room temperature and there hasn't been any changes in consistency since I've made it.

Just read about halophiles and really don't think it's salty enough to present a problem.

Well I first heard of fleshlight on the movie Zac and Miri Make a Porno and thought it was ridiculous. Curiosity finally got the best of me though and I ordered one. I'm glad I found this thread before spending ridiculous amounts on lube! I tried a water and cornstarch blend whacking it the old-fashioned way but as another member said on here it was too gel-like and I found it dried out much too fast. I will be trying the XG lube as soon as my FL arrives.

Salt as a preservative sounds like a great idea! I'm just curious exactly what kind of salt you're using (such as iodized or uniodized) and how much.

Found this company to be using SALT as a preservative as well. I/we should start making a competing product lol. Have you seen this simple formula used by PASSION Lube?

    Ingredients:
Water, Propanediol, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid

Sodium Benzoate acts as the preservative in this mixture. It's a well known preservative used in many foods.

That could very well make a good preservative although salt is much easier and cheaper. I also just found these ingredients used by Good Clean Love.

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Agar, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Benzoic Acid, Natural Extratives and Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Xanthan Gum

Potassium Sorbate is the main preservative here and I have seen it used in many other lubes as well (including the one you mentioned of course). This recipe is supposedly completely body-safe as it contains no parabens and it is all organic. I also found PS listed on a bottle of Propel water.

Edit: Looked up Potassium Sorbate on Amazon and found 6 oz for $12.97 and the package says to mix with 1 gallon of water. With this math, 6 oz of this should be able to preserve 128 oz of XG lube! If my math is right, that comes to about 1 1/8 tsp of PS for a 4 oz batch. To be clear, I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS. Merely gathering information at this point and wonder if anyone else has any thoughts.

I'm on board with the program but Im totally lost when I see the huge amounts of Xanthan Gum and Glycerine people are buying (a pound of the first, gallon(s!) of the latter.

As this is pretty much a male only friendly lube, how on earth is anyone using stuff at these rates?!!!
